D.A. Points is back to defend AT&T title with amateur partner Bill Murray

Back to defend hoping to follow the exact script, D.A. Points has everything in place. Starting strong in Hawaii this season, the Illinois 35 year old will celebrate his daughters 2nd birthday at Pebble Beach, hoping it will be as joyous as her first when he became a PGA tour champion for the first time. His wife will tend to the little one, while daddy deals with comedian/actor Bill Murray and the distractions his antics bring. D.A. once again plans to embrace the chaos and soak in the splendors of the tournament which begin the week of February 6th. MPCC has history as the original "Crosby" course. In 1947 it was a gathering of Bing's Friends. Today, it's a corporate enterprise raising $8.3 Million for local charities and the First Tee Program. "The Crosby" was played for 18 consecutive years on the Dunes course at MPCC, and it's final two on the Shore Course ending in 1966.. until replacing Poppy Hills 3 years ago. Defending Champ D.A. Points got off to a fast start at MPCC last year winning his first ever PGA Tour event. His amateur partner was Bill Murray. Points didn't know he was paired with the comedian, and recalled his first encounter with the funny man who will return the week of February 6th. Tiger Woods is also entered, but only a handful of the World's top ranked ranked players will be there. On the celebrity side, expect many of the CBS regulars, and Wednesday February 8th, Murray, Huey Lewis, Kenny G, George Lopez and other entertainers do a Whiskey Run (holes 1-2-3-17-18) for Charity. The format at Pebble Beach at one time featured Jack Lemmon, James Garner, Bing, and buddies. There was no mention of "The Crosby" at Tuesday's press conference at MPCC. The Tournament is firmly branded by AT&T and expect it to grow every year according to Tournament Director Ollie Nutt.

Soft spoken injury plagued Jay Don Blake is getting healthy on the Champions Tour. His win Sunday in San Francisco was his second in 5 weeks on the Senior circuit following years of frustration on the PGA Tour. The mustached Utah pro had a two shot cushion entering the final round at the Schwab Cup, and maintained that margin for victory over 4 others including Mark Calcavecchia, who needed a two-way tie for second in order to capture the Season money winning title and earn the Schwab Cup. At 6 underpar, Jay Haas, Michael Allen, and Loren Roberts all split the second place purse, and when the final dollars were counted, Tom Lehman barely edged Calcavecchia to earn the Schwab Cup trophy.

Problem is, a trio of other players joined him at 6 underpar, and the arithmetic just didn't work out for Mark. Plagued with back issues in recent years, Champions Tour Player Jay Don Blake is setting the pace after 3 rounds. His 8 under par is two shots better than Michael Allen, Jay Haas and David Frost. Jay Don finally was able to conquer the par 3 17th hole after 2 rounds of frustration at Harding's shortest hole. Blake has one PGA tour win, and a Champions tour victory earlier this season in a 4 man playoff. Michael Allen meanwhile never did win a PGA tour event, but is finding new life in the over 50 circuit. Sunday's final round, is the season finale of the Champions tour season and the Schwab Cup finale. Couples, Hass and the 12 American PGA players selected, face the International squad in Australia in a couple weeks. Tom Lehman won on the old Hogan Tour (now Nationwide) at 31, a multi-winner on the PGA Tour, and has captured 3 events on the Champions Tour this season at age 52. At the end of last year, Tom Lehman feared his competitive playing days might be over unless he underwent knee replacement surgery. The arthritis was killing him, so Lehman figured "what do I have to lose". A lifelong skier, Tom decided to take his family to Colorado on a ski vacation between Christmas and New Years. His round which started so promising with 4 birdies on his first 6 holes ended at 3 under par 68...the same score as his previous two rounds. Nate will tee off around noon Saturday, but since some of the field never finished due to a fog delay Friday, the cut comes in the morning. A 2 hour fog delay played havoc with starting times, so many of the opening round leaders with late tee offs may not finish. In the clubhouse with the lead at 8 underpar is Paul Casey, who blazed through in 7 underpar 64 fashion. Casey, from Surrey England, the only player in the field ranked in the World's top 20 owns a 2 shot edge over Tennessee's Garrett Willis. With most the field still on course, and 1st co-leader Brendan Steele just now teeing off (3:10pm Pacific) there probably will not be a definitive halfway leader of the tournament, nor a determination of the 70 lowest scores to make the cut until after dark. Casey meanwhile is still experiencing jet lag, having played and won in Korea last weekend, and is also battling an injury to his right foot. Moving up the leader board and into contention is Tiger Woods who fired a 3 under 68, while his amateur playing partner Patrick Cantlay had a rough day and sits at the current cut line of 1 over par. Yesterday, Woods was distressed with his putting...today he was pleased. At 7 strokes back at the moment, Tiger feels if he goes low Saturday, he's got a real chance. They played together for the first time on Tuesday at John Frys' "Institute" course in Morgan Hill. Thursday at CordeValle in San Martin, the former World's #1 pro and the current top amateur will tee it up in the Frys.com Open, playing in the same threesome with British Open winner Louis Oosthuizen. While the pros compete for part of the $5million purse, Cantlay will retain his amateur status, and head back to his classes at UCLA on Monday. The Bruin star doesn't smile much unlike Woods who has been showing his pearly whites regularly this week as he tries to regain his lost magic on the golf course. There's no guarantee the leaders will finish before dark, but for now, the sun is shining though the fog has not lifted. Daniel Chopra who flirted with a 59 yesterday, settling for a 9 underpar 61, leads the field at 12 underpar. Problem is, Chopra and playing partners Luke List and Russell Knox who are a shot behind, don't tee off until 3:09. In an effort to play quicker, officials have split the remaining field of 60 into 20 threesomes starting at #1 and #10. If a horn sounds at anytime this afternoon, with the fog taking over again..the tournament will end based on yesterday's leaderboard.

The two-time All-American from Duke who hails from Soquel, Ca. but went to RLS as a prep, barely made the AT&T cut but will play tomorrow at Pebble Beach. Nathan Smith missed a half dozen putts inside 8 feet but struck the ball outstanding on Saturday at MPCC. We followed Nate for a couple holes and captured this action. He 3 putted number eight on the Shore Course and missed a short putt for par on 9. He then hit a perfect drive on 10, sent a cut 3 wood to the green setting up an eagle putt. Smith made birdie and was back to 2 under par where he started the day. Time allowed for only 4 holes of follow time, but upon our departure, Nate had 3 more birdies heading to 17. He then gave those 3 strokes back with a double bogie, bogey finish. Nathan tees off at 9:07am at number 10 on Sunday, and will be joined by fellow pros Charlie Wi, David Duval and Paul Stankowski in his foursome. 72 pros survived the cut at 2 under par 212, which is 10 shots behind leader Steve Marino who hits his first shot at 9:40 on number 1. Spectators will be flocked to the D.A. Points-Bill Murray twosome in the group prior to Marino's. Amateur celebrities George Lopez, Matt Cain, and Maury Povich also made the cut as part of the top 25 Pro-Am teams.

Points shot par on #18 at Pebble, he and amateur partner Bill Murray would have played in the final group with Marino...but he bogeyed to stand 2 behind the leader. The rarest shot in golf was accomplished by Alex Cejka today...Teeing off on #10 at MPCC. His foursome had the opening 8am tee time and he promptly hit a good drive on the par 5 hole, then drained a 250 yard 3 wood for a double eagle two...known as an Albatross. The Czech player now living in Las Vegas went on to fire a 6 under 64 at the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club, but it was not good enough to capture the first round lead of the AT&T. The top spot belongs to D.A. Points, whose amateur partner is non other than Bill Murray. Playing through Murray's continual comedy routine for 18 holes, Points fired a 7 under 63 at MPCC. Also at minus 7 is Steve Marino who played Spyglass Hill in ideal opening round conditions...but it was D.A. Points using Murray's antics to keep him loose. It was the first time the two players from Illinois had ever teed it up together, with the exception of yesterday's practice round at Cypress Point. Two time defending Champion Dustin Johnson shot a 1 over par 71, as did Phil Mickelson. Leading the over 50 set is Michael Bradley of Palo Alto, who is tied for 4th, having carded a 5 under 65, also at MPCC.

Jack Lemmon was a hollywood legend, but his golf game left much to be desired. His exploits at Pebble Beach are well documented, having never made the cut in 25 tries..most of those efforts when this event was known as "The Crosby". At the annual California Golf Writers and broadcasters banquet, an award with Lemmon's name is presented to an "Ambassador of Golf" honoree. This year, a pair of pals were acknowledged.. Kruk and Kuip, do play by play and color broadcasts for the World Champion San Francisco Giants, and as a team, they were selected by the California Golf Writers Association for their contributions to the game. Others were honored at Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach Tuesday night. The Northern California Golf Association (NCGA) opened it's Hall of Fame to a quartet of Bay Area Golf legends. For most of the past 52 years, the CGWBA banquet kicking off AT@T (Crosby) week has been hosted by Bob Murphy. The former baseball player at Stanford, AD at San Jose State, play by play broadcaster and overall funny man is off to Australia this year at age 80. Mitch Juricich of "Hooked on Golf" filled Murph's shoes at the podium last night at Spanish Bay, with the festivities beginning with a taped message from Murphy. Bob has also been the on course MC for celebrity and pro shootouts for the past couple decades, as the charity events that preceed the tournament. This year, KNBR's Brian Murphy manned the mic, so "Murph" replaces "Murph". Bob Murphy's humor and history connected with the Tournament will be missed.

World Champion San Francisco Giants, and Super Bowl Champion 49ers at Pebble

They teed it up for charity on Tuesday. Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper teamed along with Cody Ross and Matt Cain for the Giants..while Jerry Rice and Brent Jones partnered with Dwight Clark and Harris Barton for the Niners in the first annual Google Charity Shoot-Out. The high tech giant sponsored the event today at Pebble Beach in glorious sunshine and windy conditions. $100,000 was earned for the Giants Community Fund, 49ers Foundation and 4 other local charities. Jerry Rice may sport the best golf game, but Matt Cain had the best swing and launched a 360 yard drive on the 3rd hole in the skins format alternate shot competition. This event replaces professionals playing for charity on Tuesday of the tournament, and the fans, Pebble Beach Company, and probably the pro players agree it's a smart move...especially with the Giants coming off a World Series Title, and all participating 49ers have won Super Bowl rings. The shootout was MC'd by Brian Murphy from the morning show at KNBR-Radio which carries both San Francisco Giant and 49er games. For decades, it was Bob Murphy announcing the festivities. At 80 years young, "Murph" who dates back to the very beginning of "The Crosby", has passed the mic to the younger "Murph".

Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill will once again be joined by MPCC and it's spectacular Shore course for the upcoming AT&T Pro-am. Today, media assembled along with 2-time defending champion Dustin Johnson for a press conference and a round of golf. The surf was pumping as viewed from 14 or the 18 holes adjacent to the Pacific, and the wildlife teamed with the environment. Poppy Hills was replaced by MPCC as the 3rd course played for the tournament last year, and now looks to be a permanent venue, as the pros and amateurs tee it up for the first 3 rounds. Not particularly long at 6,914 yards, the layout is eye candy, much like famed Pebble Beach itself. For 20 years, MPCC hosted the Bing Crosby Clambake, but returns again with AT@T the title sponsor. Most of the World's top pros, excluding Tiger Woods have committed to play when the event officially begins Thursday February 10th. A few new celebrities join the field that features many of CBS TV stars, but golf fans and star seekers will be happy to know Bill Murray is back, and so is Oscar de la Hoya who was a a big hit in his first AT@T 5 years back. The Hall of Fame boxer is now retired and is president of Golden Boy promotions. Surfing super star Kelly Slater returns, and making his first start in the field, is San Francisco Giant ace Matt Cain. Otherwise the celebrity field remains pretty much the same, with female soccer star Brandi Chastain, the lone female in the field of 156 pros and amateurs. Long hitting 4 time PGA tour winner Dustin Johnson is looking to 3-peat at Pebble Beach. With the AT@T a few weeks away, the two-time defending Champion will attempt what Mark O'Meara, Tom Watson, and Jack Nicklaus could not...win the tournament 3 years in a row. His wire to wire win last year placed Johnson with iconic company, and he was in position this past summer to win again at the famed links. Dustin led the U.S. Open with a 4 shot cushion entering the final round at Pebble Beach, but quickly fell back in the pack after a horrendous start. It was a battle to the final hole between John Cook and San Mateo's Michael Allen, but the Champions Tour player from So. Cal prevailed. Bernard Langer however left no doubt that he would capture the overall Charles Schwab Cup for season long excellence. After 3 days of excellent weather, today's final round at Harding was an adventure, including over and hour rain delay of the round. Michael Allen who fired a course record 61 yesterday dueled Cook to the final hole and had a chance to send the event into sudden death. Allen missed his 12 footer for birdie, while Cook drained his 14 footer for par to capture the win by 2 shots, his 5th Champions Tour triumph. The Schwab points race was down to two players also when the seasons' final Champions Tour stop began at Harding Park, but Fred Couples' balky back prevented him from making the charge he needed to overtake Bernhard Langer, who captured his 1st Schwab Cup $1 million bonus and no doubt will 3 peat as "Player of the year" on the Champions Tour. Langer finished tied for 3rd, 5 shots behind Cook. Today's 4 under par 67, minus 17 for the week at Harding Park by John Cook completed his wire to wire victory on the course his mentor, Ken Venturi gained much of his fame. Cook pocketed $440,000 for the victory, plus a $300,000 annuity for finishing third in the points race behind Couples and Langer. Michael Allen and Russ Cochran rounded out the top 5.

Granted, soggy fairways resulted in lift, clean and place rules placed in effect, but Allen's sensational round was off the charts. His near flawless performance vaulted him atop the leader board after 3 rounds of the Schwab Cup Championships. John Cook who led after the first two rounds is a shot back, with David Frost 2 off the pace. Michael Allen has been a member of the Olympic Club since age 14, and even though he left San Mateo for the Arizona desert 20 years ago, he still maintains his membership at that famed course a mile south of here, which will be the site for the 2012 U.S. Open. The PGA tour is happening locally, but "Giant's Fever" is dwarfing the significance of the event coming to San Martin. The course, nestled on the east side of the the Santa Cruz mountain foothills. It's the Frys.com Open, and despite a fine field and the great outdoors at a tremendous venue, it's spectator numbers are low, providing a fine experience for golf fans wanting to get close to the action. Plenty of action today, and Rocco Mediate held on to his 3 shot cushion as when the day began, but now Bo Van Pelt is the nearest challenger. Ricky Fowler, the 21 year old Ryder Cup sensation seeking his first win is in the hunt 6 back, with Alex Prugh and Ryuji Imada in between on the leader board. Mediate's putter was not as deadly today, but he still managed a 4 under 67 as he's in position to go wire to wire. The Frys.com Open is a John Fry creation. He plans to move the PGA tour stop to his private course The Institute. A few of the pros in the field have played the Championship course 10 miles away and rave about it's condition and the speed of the greens. They also comment that the speed is fair because of mathematic intelligence that factored into each green. John Fry's Institute Course is only played by a select few invited guests. CordeValle is a member's resort, and more than prepared to host a PGA Tour event.

We pick him up on the 18th hole (his 9th of the day) after hitting one stiff to within 3 feet. His front 9 was a struggle, losing 5 more strokes to par. His 8 over par round of 79 places him in 128th place, and would need to go low tomorrow for a chance to crack the top 60 and make the cut. This PGA Tournament is here in San Martin, California for the first time. It's here primarily because of John Fry, the founder of Fry's Electronics. The event will move to Fry's private course "The Institute" just a few miles from here in 2-3 years, but CordeValle is a superb countryside course that provides a great test for many of the World's greatest players. Granted, not the biggest names are here with this being an end of season tour stop, but plenty of the games best are in the field. Paul Goydos who served as co-captain at the recent Ryder Cup matches in Whales shot a 6 under 65 this morning and shares the lead. Goydos who shot a 59 on the tour this year is one of the late 40's players in the field which includes several stars from the Champions circuit including Tom Lehman, Michael Allen and Tom Pernice Jr. Many of the young lions are here as well including Ryder Cup star Ricky Fowler. Many players in the field are jockeying for a top 125 money winning mark to earn a PGA tour card for next season. Other are here to protect their standing in this $5 Million purse event with $900,000 going to winner.

It's 90+ degrees at the picturesque countryside CordeValle Resort between Gilroy and Morgan Hill, but Issac has been around the block, and is ready for elements. Competing against this caliber of player however, is a new experience. Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland held off Frenchman Gregory Havret to capture his first major at Pebble Beach. Dustin Johnson seemed in control when play began, but he quickly imploded with a triple bogie on #2 and failed to finish in the top-10 despite being 6 under with a 3 shot lead. Ernie Els seemed on the verge of gaining control on the front 9, but a double bogey on 10 doomed him. Tiger Woods bogeyed his first hole and struggled throughout the day...and as all the marquee names stumbled, Havret and McDowell were steady. In the end, both Euro players handled the pressure and avoided big mistakes, while the Americans had adventures throughout. Havret had the best result in a major for a Frenchman since 1907, finishing a single shot behind McDowell who ended at even par. Graeme McDowell's triumph was his first on the PGA tour, though he did win in Wales two weeks ago.

I get to play Pebble Beach once per decade. Always at the media day, as the USGA and the brass at Pebble open the links following a press conference. Before Watson's historic chip on #17 to edge Nicklaus in 1982, Tom Kite's windblown win in 1992 and Tiger's 15 stroke route in 2000...members of the media who cover the event get rewarded a round on the famed links. Wednesday was fun and games for the celebrity field playing with the pros in the Jerry Rice hosted tuneup for the Fresh Express Nationwide Tour stop in Hayward at the Stonebrae TCP course. A dozen of Rice's former teammates with the 49ers played in the pro-am, along with other pro athletes and entertainers. Jerry Rice, who will enter the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio this summer is playing in the field of professionals hoping to make the cut after Friday's round, but a pro athlete has never made it to the weekend in Nationwide Tour history. This year's purse is up to $600,000 with the winner earning over $100K, but every pro in the field targets finishing the season in the top 25 to gain PGA tour status. It's early in the year, with Texan Bobby Gates setting the money earning pace. He tees off at 12:30 Thursday, while Rice hits his first shot at 2pm

Far Hills, N.J. (April 12) – Tom Watson, who won the 1982 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links, has accepted a special exemption from qualifying for the 2010 U.S. Open Championship, which will be played June 17-20 at Pebble Beach.

“I am deeply grateful to the USGA for extending me the invitation to play in the U.S. Open at one of my favorite golf courses in the world, Pebble Beach Golf Links,” said Watson, 60. “Some of my life’s favorite times have been spent near Stillwater Cove. I know there will be more this coming June.”

Watson, the winner of eight major championships in his career, has competed in 30 U.S. Open Championships. He was runner-up in 1983 and 1987 and has 11 times placed in the top 10.

With his addition to the field in 2010, he will become the only player to have played in all five U.S. Open Championships at Pebble Beach, which previously hosted the championship in 1972, 1982, 1992 and 2000.

In his last start in the U.S. Open in 2003 at Olympia Fields (Ill.) Country Club, Watson was tied for the lead after 18 holes and finished tied for 28th. His first U.S. Open appearance came in the 1972 championship at Pebble Beach.

In 2009, he captured worldwide attention with his runner-up finish at the British Open Championship at Turnberry. At 59, Watson was the oldest player to lead a major championship after three rounds. He held a one-stroke lead going into the 72nd hole, where a bogey left him tied with Stewart Cink, who won the subsequent four-hole playoff.

At the Masters this past weekend, Watson, the 1977 and 1981 champion, shot an opening-round 67 and finished tied for 18th with son Michael serving as his caddie.

Watson has received four previous special exemptions into the U.S. Open and finished in the top 30 each time: 1993 (tied for fifth), 1996 (tied for 13th), 2000 (tied for 27th at Pebble Beach) and 2003 (tied for 28th).

Nobody is hotter than Dustin Johnson on the PGA tour. He's playing his way into the Masters and perhaps a shot at Corey Pavin's Ryder Cup team. The soft spoken big handed Carolinian doesn't have much to say despite going back to back and wire to wire at the AT&T. He shows little emotion despite his achievement on Valentines day. A personality is not in the bag for one of the longest hitters on the tour. He's focused and even. Emotion is not part of his game. But how can you not be outwardly excited following a drama packed performance? I talked with Johnson all 4 days after leading the tournament and at Spanish Bay for a media event several weeks early, and it's always the same stoic figure. He'll smile and be spend time with you, but don't expect any jokes or expressive emotion. That seems to be makeup of many winners at Pebble. The media was completely entertained when Bret Ogle won in 1993. The Australian rookie was genuinely taken in by the moment of winning. He let the press and world see his joy. Granted, it was his first PGA tour win while Johnson now has 3 in 2+ seasons...but Dustin did not allow himself to embrace the moment. He'll be in many media situations in the future, so it would serve the 25 year star to bring some material to the party.

It was a struggle, but in the end, a sandy birdie on famed #18 at Pebble Beach vaulted defending champion Dustin Johnson into the winner's circle again. His 2 over par final round 74 was just enough to hold off hard charging David Duval who was the only player with all 4 rounds in the 60's, and JB Holmes finishing a single shot back.
